South32 (ASX: S32) has received federal environmental approval for its Worsley Mine Development Project under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999) (Cth). The approval, granted on 12 February 2025, follows state approval received on 20 December 2024 and will enable access to additional bauxite reserves to sustain production at Worsley Alumina.
Mining in the newly approved areas is expected to commence in the fourth quarter of FY25, with production expected to be sustained until at least FY36, subject to secondary approvals. The federal approval is subject to conditions, which are largely consistent with those imposed by the state government.
South32 CEO Graham Kerr said the approval was a positive outcome for the company, its workforce, and the Peel and South West communities. He noted that Worsley Alumina has been operating for over 40 years and is one of the largest employers in the region, supporting thousands of workers and contractors.
South32 emphasised its commitment to responsible mining, highlighting that Worsley Alumina has received multiple certifications from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative for meeting global standards in alumina production. The company reiterated its broader purpose of contributing to the global energy transition while fostering strong relationships with local communities.
